Music

Music at United Lutheran Church assists in proclaiming the Word and allows people of United to respond to God's grace and love in song. Through the music of the church the United family praises God and supports each other in the faith. In this way, music is a vehicle for praising God and for building up the community of United.

The Senior Choir sings for most of the Sunday services from September through early June. Supporting the liturgy by assisting the congregation in singing hymns and liturgy and providing musical parts of the service is the prime focus of this group. The United choir also sings a wide variety of musical styles from chant and Renaissance motets to contemporary compositions and music from other parts of the world. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 8:00 - 9:30.

The Handbell Choir is a cheerful and group that meets weekly on Monday evenings from 8:00 - 9:00. Because of the teamwork required in handbell playing, members of this group form a special bond. Commitment and cooperative spirit make this ensemble special.

The Handbell Choir accompanies the choir and the congregation on some pieces as well as presenting solo pieces.Instrumentalists: A wide variety of congregation members, friends and guests add instrumental music to worship at United. From piano, guitar, harp and flutes to organ, trumpet, and timpani, there are plenty of opportunities for participation for almost any instrumental player..

The "United Orchestra," comprised of all instrumentalists in the congregation, meets semi-annually. Professional musicians from the greater Oak Park-River Forest area also participate in worship on a regular basis.

The Summer Choir meets at 9:00 on Sunday mornings in July to sing for the Sunday service. Anyone can participate on any or all of the Sundays, in fact, the group is intentionally inter-generational and invitational especially to those who have limited opportunities to sing during the "regular" season or who want to "test the waters" of choral singing.
