Rev. Mangasa Saor Parlindungan is one of the pastors of the largest Lutheran church in
Indonesia, the Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP)/the Protestant Christian Batak Church. As a Lutheran church, HKBP inherited the Lutheran tradition through German missionaries who came to Batak land to preach the gospel.
Therefore, Rev. Mangasa was born and raised in a Christian family that adheres to the Lutheran tradition. After completing his studies at the
Jakarta Theological Seminary in 2004 (bachelor’s in theology) and 2010 (Master of Theology),
he started his ministry as a vicar at HKBP in 2011. He was ordained as a pastor of HKBP in May
2013.
He is currently completing his PhD in systematic theology at the Lutheran School of
Theology at Chicago. He is working on his dissertation, “Hybridity in Lutheranism,” a study and
comparison of the Batak Church confession and the Nias Church confession with the Augsburg confession.
