Welcome to United!
Rooted in Oak Park...
United Lutheran Church has been a positive influence in Oak Park and surrounding communities for almost 95 years. Founded in 1928 by Norwegian Lutherans, it shed that strong ethnic identity decades ago and now welcomes and embraces all, regardless of national origin, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and relationship status. United invites everyone to participate in worship, community involvement, service to others and fellowship.
...in Mission
In addition to continuing its vital regular worship services at 9:30 every Sunday morning (in-person or on Zoom) inside the building, United increasingly looks outward to address the 21st century imperative to be of service in various ways to people beyond the church doors, including beyond Oak Park and River Forest.
...in the city
One example is our recently formed relationship with A House in Austin, which provides support for young families on Chicago’s west side. AHIA had its genesis among parents, caregivers, professionals and neighbors who wanted to help one another raise their children and strengthen families. One of its several programs is My Fresh Table, a cooking course to demonstrate healthy meal options, food budgeting and meal preparation. Members of United provide the ingredients for every other-week meal-prep class and stand ready to volunteer for other tasks.

...and far beyond
As part of its Mission of the Month ministry, United congregation members make donations or material support to a designated organization each month. Beyond Hunger, formerly the Oak Park and River Forest Food Pantry, and Housing Forward are regular beneficiaries. So are agencies with a global reach, including the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and the World Hunger Appeal of the ELCA.
...a home for communities
United also makes its facilities available to others. Chicago Church of Christ, a large non-denominational congregation, worships and holds meetings in the church. Impact Basketball, an athletic skill development program for kids and youth in Chicago’s west side and Oak Park, regularly practices in our gym. Al-Anon has long met in one of the many rooms, and United has been a collection point each winter for donations to the Holiday Food and Gift Basket program, which tries to ease the financial hardships of families in Oak Park and River Forest. United has hosted an ecumenical sewing group, a prayer shawl ministry and frequent musical events.

...God's freeing grace coming alive
Worship is central in the life of the congregation and all are encouraged to participate. Just as Jesus loved and cared for people regardless of their age, gender or other characteristics, United strives to reflect this open-hearted love of Jesus. Its Sunday morning service includes scripture readings, a 10-minute sermon, several hymns and liturgical music pieces sung by the congregation and a choir or cantor, as well as participation in Holy Communion (also known as the eucharist).
